Distance Education (DE) is a modality that, along with its vertiginous growth in recent years, has raised important debates related to the quality and continuity of courses offered. Among the discussions that pervade the field, it is worth mentioning the so-called institutionalization process. It is a phenomenon that combines human and material aspects, while it depends on endogenous and exogenous factors that contribute to the crystallization of practices within the institutional framework, aiming at perpetuity and resistance in the face of internal and external destabilization. That said, the main objective of this article is to discuss the institutionalization of DE within the scope of the Federal University of Lavras (UFLA), based on the experiences of coordinating the degree course in Pedagogy offered in this modality. For the proposed analysis, we gathered a theoretical-conceptual framework, which we elaborated in other researches, with the experience derived from that University. As a result, it is concluded that, within the scope of UFLA, important advances have been achieved, such as the offer of courses within the scope of Universidade Aberta do Brasil (UAB) System since 2009, together with discussions that have been building the experience and paths of the Institution over the years. However, this whole process did not happen without intense clashes entangled in resistance, prejudice and antagonistic views between DE and face-to-face education that, even today, persist.
