This scientific article has the general objective of analyzing the concepts of digital competences in distance education. The research problem addresses the need to understand the development and importance of students' and educators' digital skills in the context of distance education. The methodology used consisted of a literature review, which explored definitions and concepts of digital competences, as well as their relationships with pedagogical practices, teaching strategies, technological resources and assessment. The main results found indicate that digital skills are fundamental for the success of distance education, allowing students to effectively use digital technologies in a critical, creative and ethical way. The evaluation of these competences is also important, aiming at the continuous improvement of the teaching-learning process. Gaps and areas where more research is needed were identified, such as the validation of assessment instruments and the deepening of innovative approaches for the development of digital competences. In summary, this study contributes to the field of distance education, providing a comprehensive view on digital skills and their relationship with online teaching and learning. The conclusions highlight the importance of investing in the training of educators and in the creation of learning environments conducive to the development of students' digital skills.
